The rally which initially was called Paris Dakar rally kicked off in the year 1978. This is and remains the most popular desert event and is rated highest in participation and attracting the most viewership.
The rally which was an annual event was stopped from the normal route due insecurity in Mauritania. This made the Organisers Amaury Sport Organization (ASO)to shift the event to South America.
The race is an off-road endurance event and is believed to be the toughest on earth. Participants register with the organization ASO.
The rally is specially unique due to the terrains that the vehicles pass through. It’s truly an off road race.
Vehicles 🚗 are specially made for off-road where they go through competitive special sections that are off-road, crossing dunes, mud, camel grass, rocks, and erg among others
Daily distance coverage by the ranges from 800 to 900 kilometers which is an equivalent of 500 to 560 miles per day.
It’s one race not for the faint spirited as it’s full of desert hardships, hot temperatures, dusty ventures and uninhabitable environments.

Many of the vehicle manufacturers exploit the harsh and uninhabitable environment’s. This rally offers as a testing ground and consequently to demonstrate the durability of their vehicles, although most vehicles are heavily modified or purpose built.
The race has over time received criticism from different bodies including the Vatican 🇻🇦 especially after the year 2002 accident that hit three Africans as vehicles raced.
The race has been seen as a show of might exposure game which brings no significant impact to the African countries that is traversed. This among many are part of the reasons why the race was moved from Africa to the continent of South America.
