It is June 2017, which means that it is time again for the FIFA Confederations Cup. It is an international men’s football tournament, organised by FIFA, held in the country that will host the FIFA World Cup the next year, in this case Russia. This will be the 10th FIFA Confed Cup.
It will run from June 17th to July 2nd 2017. As again mentioned, it will be hosted in Russia. This is the first time Russia will hold either the Confed and/or the World Cup tournaments. The matches will be held in four major cities across the nation, Saint Petersburg, Kazan Sochi and the capital, Moscow.
The tournament comprises of eight teams. Russia automatically qualify since they are the hosts. The other automatic qualifiers are Germany, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winners. The remaining six nations are the FIFA confederation champions in their respective continents.
Australia – 2015 Asian Cup winners;
Chile – 2015 Copa America winners
Mexico – 2015 CONCACAF Cup winners
New Zealand – 2016 OFC Nations Cup winners
Portugal – 2016 Euro Cup winners
Cameroon – 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winners.
On the opening night, the hosts Russia will battle New Zealand in Match 1 of the Tournament at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg.
Brazil are the defending champions of the Confed Cup, but did not qualify for this year’s tournament. They won the tournament in 2013 when they hosted the tournament, a year before the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the same nation.
The full schedule of the tournament can be found here.
The live proceedings of each game can be watched across the globe. Please ensure you confirm with your signal providers to enjoy the Tournament that will lay grounds for the forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
